Thought it might be interesting to talk computers a bit...

Mine I built a couple of years ago, it is:

Dual Xeon Nocona 2.8 GHz 800FSB overclocked to 3.22/920.
2GB DDR2 RAM
5 x 36GB 15000 rpm SCSI 320 drives in RAID 1E
XFX 2 x DVI NVIDIA 6600 video card
2x 19 inch LCD monitors
Water cooled
Some other minor stuff...

Image

How about yours?

One gig is the bare minimum you want with XP. Yeah, sure you can have it on 64M, as Microsoft lists in hardware requirements, but if you want to actually do something with it, one gig is a must nowadays.
And I like Dells, btw. I used to use quite a few of them and I still has a couple of notebooks.

I know that's the bare minimum and you know its the bare minimum, but they keep selling the dang things with 256 or 512 standard.

Dells aren't bad computers, and they have great customer support. I just don't trust pre-packaged bundles of hi-tech to be filled with quality components.

Its not a big issue for me now though. I don't do any rendering, just light photoshop work, illustrator, and 3D nurbs models

I do a lot of rendering - all that home-made movies I send to my and my wife's parents to keep them in contact with their grandchildren Smile My wife's computer (3.2 GHz P4 HT with 1 G RAM), while still decent for other jobs, does movies about three times slower...

Cool, I have a similar laptop too, 3G RAM though. And I did upgrade my main puter last year, it got much more powerful and quiet but looks pretty much the same.

That's more hardware than my computing needs. I have an off the shelf, discounted Compaq, that I brought news in 94. It is good for my needs.

...a Toshiba Satellite P105 with 3 gigs ram, 160 gig dual core, 17 inch screen + 80 gig external hard drive.

This is the second Satellite I've owned and I love the series.
