Last winter I had several sandbags and an old bag of cement in the bed. Some of the sandbags slid around and froze in ice away from the axle. The cement was the last item I got around to removing. The bag disintegrated, so what was left was a large crumbling rock rolling around. Eventually I thought it could be a safety hazard if I hit a big bump and the rock gets launched out of the bed. Next summer I will probably add some sort of restraint system to hold the weights on the axle. A sealed bucket of sand in the cab would also be a good idea, so it's not frozen solid when I need to throw some sand under the tires.
